feast@4

We started a new service in January - this was one of the reviews we had:

"It was Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The band was rocking and the place was buzzing!  What a feast we had in every way. Mums and dads, with children of all ages, enjoying pizza and ice cream. A party? No, not quite. Clarissa the Camel batting her eyelashes, swaying to the music, joining in the fun. A pantomime? Oh no it wasn't! Art and craft activities, stories, paper planes, word searches, it was difficult to choose what to do. For the less energetic there was time to share a quiet chat, personal thoughts or a group discussion. A new club? Well it could have been. The star, followed by three 'wise cracking' wise men, was the first clue. They and Clarissa were enjoying themselves so much they threatened to steal the show! A story with drama and a short talk around the theme of Epiphany, together with some enthusiastic singing and thoughtful prayers put everything in place.

This was feast@4, a new venture for St Andrew's Church in Junction Road, Burgess Hill to be held on the first Sunday in every month. This is a lovely way for the whole family to attend informal services with other members of St Andrew's community and to develop an understanding of Christianity, at a family friendly time of day. Judging by the enthusiastic comments as everyone waved goodbye to Clarissa, they will be looking forward to the first Sunday in February. That is certainly a first for this time of year!"

Letter from Georgie Kargbo.

Dear Friends,

Calvary greetings from Freetown, Sierra Leone in Jesus name.

We thank God for sparing our lives and giving us another opportunity to live and serve Him 2008.

We (COAM FAMILY) are so grateful to GOD for each and every one of you who have been and is a blessing to us through your divers support and will continue to emphasize that had it not been for your prayers and financial support we might not have gotten this far may the name of the Lord be glorified!

Despite the challenges over the years we are thankful for the move of God’s power through the manifestation of His word in the ministry.

There’s been an increase numerically this past year and also changes in the lives of people who has been judged, condemned and given up by members of families and community. We can see God raising up a mighty army in that part of His vineyard.

Hastings is a very dark area, we are trusting God for increase in the fellowship, numerically  as well as spiritually and to enable us to train and equip people for work of service in Hastings.

We celebrated our second year of existence as a church on the 13th January, community members, wellwishers and sister churches joined us in giving God thanks for bringing us thus far.

Through funds raised we managed to put up the first three class rooms but is still trusting God for the finishing cause He who have started the good work is faithful and will surely complete it. And there is also the second building to go up before the next academic school year.  We don’t know how it’s going to be done but confident it will be done by the special grace of God.

Most of the funds for the construction of the pit latrines have been raised by dear friends in the UK and work has already commenced. Its depth is 15ft, length 12ft and breadth 7ft. may God richly bless them.

Because of the great urgency and pleading of members of the church and community for the adult literacy programme we have sent two teachers to be trained to teach the youths and adults. Classes will start first week next month. The illiteracy rate of youths, young men and women in our community is very high and many in the church one desire is to be able to read the bible.

Thank God For:

  • Willing supporters

  • Growth (Numerical and spiritual)

  • The Adult Literacy

  • Leadership

Pray for:

1. Funds for completion of first building and construction of second building
2. Foster parents for needy children wanting to enter Jewels
3. Continuous strength, wisdom and direction for leadership
4. Hunger and thirst for more of the word

May God continue to water you even as you water others.

Yours in Christ, Georgiana Kargbo

Renewal of Baptism Vows

On Sunday 28 September 2008 there will be an opportunity to renew baptismal vows.  For this occasion we shall seek to contact people who were baptised at St Andrew’s and encourage them to attend even if they have otherwise lost contact with us. Please note that this is a new event in the programme and further details will be announced in due course.

HOPE 08

Hope 08 is a nationwide initiative during 2008 to encourage Christians to get involved in their local communities. It is good to know that this is an ecumenical idea and at least 6 churches in Burgess Hill are getting involved.

What is its vision? The dream is to change a nation, admittedly it's not a small dream but since when did God ever tell us to aim small?

We worship a wonderful God who we know loves every single one of the 60 million+ people living in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

He longs to reach out to each one of them, and has poured enough resources into his Churches to do just that. We've got all we need at our disposal to do the job. The Church has been hidden for too long. We're known by many for pointing the finger on moral issues and collecting money for church renovations. We’re seen as a dying old-fashioned institution, so why don't we blow our cover in style?

What would happen if in 2008 every community saw the life of Jesus Christ displayed through the passion and actions of thousands of Christians?

Wouldn't it be amazing if everywhere people looked, there were Christians getting involved with their community finding out its needs and being ready to take action.

What would happen if people were to see the church as the bible teaches it is meant to be, reflecting the love and passions of God. If we God's people are united in offering ourselves to God to reach and touch those around us, we have the potential to see him change the history of the United Kingdom, FOR his kingdom. To follow Jesus' example and preach the good news in both word and deed.

This is what we want to see in our town in Burgess Hill.

But firstly and most importantly everything we do must be steeped in prayer as we seek God's power and presence.
If we as Christians can come together to Pray who knows what else we could do.

At this moment almost every church in Burgess hill has shown a willingness to get involved in this year of action both together and on their own. We now need to start turning this into action.

How can St Andrews be more GREEN?

Church

  • Less paperwork, more use of electronic means of communication with parishioners. Ask those on electoral roll if they would like to opt to have this option. It would reduce the number needed of printed copies of Parish Life, even Weekly Notices or other announcements. Have a notice board and insist that instead of handouts, people read information on the notice board.

  • Transfer services to Rider Hall during Dec, Jan, and Feb which would reduce the use of heating and electricity in the main Church building.

  • Encourage car owners to bring a full load of passengers to services, possibly on a rota basis.

Long Term: put a false insulated ceiling in the church to reduce the volume required for heating the worship space. An expensive option, but might attract some government funding.

At Home: Just me at home. I switch off electrical appliances and lighting when not in use. Don't have TV or radio on unnecessarily. Do not waste food, seldom throw away food because it is not used. Use my bicycle quite often and avoid making long trips in my car.

General comments: I think global warming may not be a doomsday scenario, but every effort should be made to stop the waste of fossil fuels, oil, coal and efforts made to share more fairly the world's resources, water and food, and everybody encouraged to grow their own food, and buy less processed food which often uses lots of energy to produce and transport.

Respect for the environment and all the above issues should be made a priority in the education of children. They are the next custodians of the world's resources.

Time Out

At Timeout we meet fortnightly on a Tuesday morning to enjoy one another's company. Our Pre School children are entertained and cared for by two lovely ladies, which allows us time out to worship, pray, and study God's word together.

If you are in need of some "sane" childfree time with like-minded parents and carers come and visit us.
