 Church Army Ambassador's needed.

Church Army is a society of Evangelists linked to the Anglican Church. They seek to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, both through words and action, to the most broken, hurting & marginalized in our society in order to see a transforming of lives.

It works in many areas of need across the UK and Ireland e.g. homelessness, self harm prevention, prison ministry, urban poverty, drug and alcohol prevention, gangs ministry, helping women involved in prostitution, family breakdown prevention, Fresh Expressions and so much more.

It is setting up a new Church Army Ambassador Scheme to create a large network of parish volunteers across the UK, hoping that many people will be involved in a fulfilling ministry as they serve in their parish.

An Ambassador’s role offers various options and at a level with which people feel comfortable e.g. Prayer Intercessor, Resource Distributor, Promoter, Fundraiser, Speaker etc. The role is open to people aged 16 and above (with no upper age limit). An Ambassador’s activities will complement the activity of the parish in reaching out to the local community.

The role is formally recognised and is an important part of the Church Army family. Church Army will provide each Ambassador with a high quality and fully comprehensive information pack, DVD, badge, personalised certificate, resources, full support, online forums, network groups, invitations to events and  much more.

As Archbishop Tutu said - "Church Army has left a smile on God’s face"

If you are interested in this scheme please contact the Parish Office for more details.

The next Men’s Breakfast...

....is on Saturday 3 July at the King’s Head pub in Burgess Hill. On this occasion the speaker will be "our own" Peter Markby. His subject is "From Uganda to Burgess Hill – the story of a life." See you then!

Pre-school vacancies

The Pre-School has the following vacancies within their committee:

Treasurer – This person needs to be able to reconcile yearly accounts and termly balances and budgets

Secretary – Annual report for charity commission, termly meeting note taking.

If anybody could give us some support with these jobs we would be most grateful as the current officers cannot continue under our constitution rules. Angela Jeans the manager is also retiring this year so we are currently advertising this role as well, so it is very important that we help them through this Transition. Please speak to Alice Vine, Elaine Simmons or Roy Skinner if you can help with any of these roles or need any further information.

WHAT IS TWAM?

Those with a long enough memory will remember ‘Twag’, which was a failed Musical of some years ago. But this is different; it means ‘Tools With a Mission’. If you have some tools laying around your garage doing nothing, or a spare sewing machine, there are many people in Africa that could use them NOW. Donating these unused items would enable people with a few skills to begin earning a living and supporting their families. In 2008 nearly 350 projects across Africa benefited from more than 200 tons of aid in this way, worth over a £1m. I can let you have more information if you want to ‘downsize’ your workshop, and help an African craftsman or woman to stand on his or her own feet. Let me know if you want more information or log on to http://www.twam.co.uk/.

Wednesday Morning 10am Worship.....

Because it is important to offer prayer and praise we would like to keep this service going.

Holy Communion

We are grateful to Canon Alan Spray who has agreed to celebrate on the first Wednesday of the month. Rev Peter Markby celebrates when he is available.

Morning Prayer

When a priest is not available, we have a simple form of morning prayer. This alternates between Common Worship Morning Prayer and a "Celtic" style Service which has its origins in Iona. There are copies of the book, A Wee Worship Book, in the chapel.

The structure of the "Celtic" service is similar to Common Worship and is suited to lay involvement. The language is modern and expresses feelings close to those arising in our daily lives. For instance, a passage from prayers affirming our faith is:

"Because you have promised to hear us, and are able to change us, and are willing to make our hearts your home,
we ask you to confront, control, forgive and encourage us, as you know best."

feast@4

We all enjoy a nice cup of tea, and in many homes round about 4.p.m. the kettle will be boiling as we reach for the teabags. Even so, have you ever thought it might taste just as good, perhaps even more enjoyable, when you have just spent such an interesting hour with so many things to observe and join in that you simply didn’t notice the time! That’s what we aim to achieve with feast@4 on the first Sunday of each month at St Andrew’s.

Whoever you may be, whatever age you are and wherever you live, as a church member, you are a vital part of a special family. That is why welcoming the newest family member at a Baptism calls for a special round of applause and is a lovely part of the service. A party often follows the baptism, and since everyone enjoys a party, feast@4 is designed to be a very special fun time with an underlying Christian theme.

Many families comment on the time being very suitable for them to come along, often marking their kitchen calendars in order not to miss out.

The children really get involved in action choruses led by our youth band, there is a short film or some drama, action games and a variety of handicrafts — always a great rush to get involved in these! Tossing coloured balls in the air as we offer up different prayers to God is also a favourite occupation. It is good to see everyone enjoying themselves, parents and grandparents as well as children, for they are all part of our church, just like those attending other services, and are always very ready to chat over the teacups at refreshment time. Whilst some regular worshippers do join us, it would be so encouraging if more would be prepared to come along and help newcomers feel welcome at what truly is a real church family event. Do come and give us the pleasure of your company. We hope you’ll be glad you did!

Going into Hospital?

The Chaplaincy Team at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals has prepared the following practical advice for getting spiritual support during your stay in hospital.

Before leaving for hospital:

  • Let your priest or someone in your church know you are going in. Unless you yourself let them know, they may not find out.

When you get to hospital:

  • Let the Chaplaincy Team know that you would like to be visited. The ward staff will pass on this information for you

  • Chaplains are available for spiritual support and to help you think through the implications of your illness or treatment

  • It may be possible for you to attend the chapel service on Sunday. The ward staff will help arrange this.

  • If not, then someone from the Chaplaincy Team can visit you to bring communion or to say a prayer.

  • Your own priest can visit. It is worth checking the most convenient times.
